2026 Declared the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. However, their visibility has markedly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To grasp this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the explosion in gaming appears especially strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
